Berlin’s current growth is primarily driven by new housing pressures. In response, the Berlin senate is actively considering the development of a new neighborhood for the city on a 70 Hectare site in the Buchholz area of Pankow.
In this design studio students will understand and develop ideas for the contemporary neighborhood of the future that integrates with its surrounding urban form, and infrastructure. Students will question the current assumptions of what Berlin needs and formulate comprehensive and future oriented strategies, concepts and urban design frameworks for this new community.
Prof. Jain will share his 30-year international experience (including his role in designing new towns & communities) and his role as Chief Urban Designer of Portland, Oregon. In Portland he was responsible for the development of two new neighborhoods (The Pearl District, and South Waterfront). This studio will be future oriented, yet pragmatic in its orientation. It will introduce new approaches and strategies for creating market and socially adaptive urban design frameworks rather than traditional plans.
